미국의 로버트 게이츠 국방장관은 미국의 미사일 방어계획에 대응해 폴란드와의 국경 근처에 전술적 미사일을 배치할 것이라는 러시아의 위협은 러시아가 미국의 새 행정부를 환영한다고 생각하기 어렵게 만든다고 말했습니다.
게이츠 장관은 13일 에스토니아에서 북대서양조약기구 나토와 우크라이나 간 비공식 국방장관 회담을 마친 후 그같이 말했습니다.
게이츠 장관은 칼리닌그라드에 미사일을 배치할 것이라는 지난 주 드미트리 메드베데프 러시아 대통령의 위협이 미국 대통령 선거가 끝난 지 몇 시간 만에 나왔음을 지적하면서, 그 같은 위협은 도발적이고 잘못된 것이라고 비판했습니다.
게이츠 장관은 또한 메드베데프 대통령이 13일 프랑스 신문과의 회견에서 밝힌, 미국이 폴란드와 체코에 미사일 방어기지를 건설하려는 계획을 취소하면 러시아도 미사일 배치를 취소할 것이라는 제안을 일축했습니다.

U.S. Defense Secretary Robert Gates says Russian threats to place tactical missiles near Poland's borders, in response to U.S. missile defense plans, are "hardly the welcome" a new U.S. president deserves.
Gates spoke today (Thursday)in Estonia, after an informal meeting of NATO defense ministers with their Ukrainian counterpart. He noted that Russian President Dmitri Medvedev's threat last week to place missiles in its Baltic enclave of Kaliningrad came hours after the U.S. presidential election had concluded. He called the threat provocative and misguided.
Gates also rejected Mr. Medvedev's proposal today,(Thursday) made in a French newspaper(Le Figaro), that Moscow would cancel its missile deployment if Washington scraps its missile defense plans for Poland and the Czech Republic.
The United States wants to deploy 10 missile interceptors in Poland and guidance radar in the Czech Republic, to protect U.S. allies from possible attacks by Iran.
