유럽연합 순회의장국인 프랑스의 사르코지 대통령은 미국이 동유럽에 미사일 방어시스템을 설치하는 것에 대비해 러시아는 미사일 기지를 건설하겠다는 발표를 한 메드베데프 러시아 대통령의 발표에 이 같은 반응을 보였습니다.
한편 유럽 연합은 7일 러시아의 이같은 움직임은 유럽의 안보에 전혀 도움이 되지 않을 것이고 향후 펼쳐질 대화 노력을 어렵게 만들 것이라는 성명을 발표했습니다.
미국 정부는 미사일 방어시스템에 대한 러시아 정부의 우려를 해소하기 위해서 많은 노력을 했다고 밝히고, 이번 러시아의 결정은 실망스럽다고 밝혔습니다.
그동안 부시 행정부는 동유럽에 배치되는 미사일 방어시스템이 러시아를 과녁으로 하지는 않는다고 밝혀왔습니다. 미국 정부는 또 이 방어시스템은 이란과 같은 불량국가로부터의 위협에 대처하기 위한 것이라고 주장했습니다.

French President Nicolas Sarkozy has expressed "strong concern" about Russia's announcement of plans to station missiles near the Polish border.
Mr. Sarkozy, whose country currently holds the EU's rotating presidency, was responding to Russian President Dmitri Medvedev's statement that Moscow intends to deploy the missiles to counter a planned U.S. missile defense system in Eastern Europe.
The European Union released a statement Friday saying the Russian move will do nothing to improve European security and will curb future dialogue.
U.S. officials say they have tried hard to address Russian concerns about the missile defense system, and called Mr. Medvedev's decision "disappointing."
The Bush administration has insisted the missile defense system does not target Russia. U.S. officials say the aim is to counter a possible attack from what they call "rogue" nations such as Iran.
