South Korean police say they have arrested five Pakistanis accused of running illegal money transfers, including processing a payment from a Taliban operative for heroin production.

The suspects allegedly transferred about 75 million dollars between South Korea and Pakistan since 2005 through the paperless informal brokerage system known as "hawala," which is common in Muslim parts of the world but illegal in South Korea.

The payment from the alleged Taliban member was for 50,000 dollars. South Korean police arrested an Afghan man in July in that specific case for allegedly trying to smuggle chemicals for heroin production to Taliban insurgents.

Terrorist networks use "hawala" systems to receive money from the drug trade in Afghanistan, as well as from donors and charities in oil-rich Gulf states.
