The head of Japan's air force will be dismissed for writing a controversial essay in which he denies that Japan was an aggressor during War World Two.Japan's defense minister (Yasukazu Hamada) today (Friday) announced the decision to fire General Toshio Tamogami, saying the general's views contradict the government's position on Japan's role during the war.
In his essay, Tamogami says many people think Japan caused unbearable suffering in Asia during the war, but he says many countries take a positive view of Japan's actions.
He also argues that Japan's military action in China was based on treaties.
The view is likely to anger Japan's Asian neighbors. It also goes against a statement issued in 1995 by then-Prime Minister Tomiichi Murayama, which acknowledges the damage caused by Japan's past aggression and colonial rule.
