International and Pakistani agencies are delivering aid to thousands of people
in southwestern Pakistan, one day after a strong earthquake devastated the
region.
Officials today (Thursday) raised the death toll in
Baluchistan province to at least 215 people. Distraught villagers are burying
relatives and friends, and are continuing the search for
survivors.
Pakistani authorities have sent tents, food, blankets and
other supplies to the affected area, while medical teams have treated hundreds
of injured.
The World Health Organization said it was sending enough
supplies and medicines for 50-thousand people for three months.
The
worst hit area was Ziarat, a mountainous tourist district near the Afghan
border. Fatalities also were reported in Pishin district.
Pakistan's
central government has pledged thousands of dollars to the families of those
killed in the quake, and hundreds of dollars to those seriously injured.
