The United States and Vietnam have launched three new projects to help disabled Vietnamese in an area where U.S. troops kept toxic material during the Vietnam War.

Officials said today (Wednesday) that the U.S. Agency for International Development will provide one million dollars to fund health care and job training programs for people with disabilities in the central city of Danang.

During the war in the 1960s and 70s, U.S. forces sprayed the herbicide Agent Orange to deny forest cover to Vietnamese guerrillas and kill their crops. Agent Orange contains dioxin, which poses a health threat to those who come in contact with it.

The U.S. Congress last year set aside three million dollars to help address the health and environmental effects of dioxin in Vietnam.
