The U.S. military has handed over
security control of the southern Iraqi province of Wasit to Iraqi authorities.
A transfer ceremony was held today (Wednesday) in the provincial
capital, Kut. Wasit is the 13th of Iraq's 18 provinces to return to full
government control.
On Tuesday, a commander of U.S. forces stationed in an area of Iraq once known
as the "Triangle of Death" said he has developed a model to help turn
over security to Iraqis. Colonel Dominic Caraccilo called the model,
successfully implemented a month ago, a "Transition Task Force."
Caraccilo said the model is based on a gradual reduction of the number of U.S.
troops in an area as Iraqi forces take over, rather than on pulling out entire
units.
