관영 중국매일신문은 국무원에 의해 승인된 이번 계획이 지난 1997년 아시아에 금융위기가 닥쳤을 때, 이를 극복하기 위해 보여준 중국 정부의 노력을 연상시킨다고 보도했습니다.
이 신문은 또 정부의 고위 정책보좌관, 쳉 신리 씨의 말을 인용, 지난 1997년 경제위기에 대응해 고속도로 건설에 나선 것이 국내경제성장을 성공적으로 이끌었다고 지적했습니다. 쳉 신리 씨는 또 중국은 현 국제경제위기의 와중에 국내 철도망에 대규모로 투자함으로써 현 위기를 돌파하기를 희망한다고 밝혔습니다.
현재까지 중국에서는 철도망 확대를 위해 약 1천 700억 달러가 사용됐습니다.

China plans to spend nearly 300 billion dollars to expand
its rail system to boost economic growth amid the worldwide financial crisis.
The plan would add tens of thousands of kilometers of new rail lines across the
country.
The state run China Daily newspaper reports the plan approved by the State
Council mirrors China's efforts to blunt the Asian financial crisis in 1997.
It quoted a senior government policy advisor (Zheng Xinli)as saying
investments in highway construction eleven years ago successfully stimulated
domestic growth. He says China hopes to repeat that with massive investments in
the rail system during the current global economic crisis.
Roughly 170 billion dollars have already been allocated for the rail expansion.
