태국 최고법원이 21일 탁신 친나왓 전 총리에 대해 직권 남용 혐의로 징역 2년형을 선고했습니다. 탁신 전 총리는 지난 2006년 부패와 직권남용 혐의를 받은 뒤 군사 쿠데타에 의해 총리직에서 물러났으며 오늘 그에 대한 첫 판결이 이루어 졌습니다.
이날 법원은 탁신 전 총리가 총리 재임 시절인 지난 2003년 자신의 부인이 중앙은행의 자금으로 토지를 매입하도록 개입해 직권을 남용했다고 판결했습니다. 법원은 그러나 탁신 전 총리의 부인에게는 무죄를 선고했습니다.
공정한 재판을 받을 수 없다며 두 달전부터 부인과 함께 영국에 망명중인 탁신 전 총리는 이날 법정에 출두하지 않았습니다. 탁신 총리는 태국 법원의 결정에 놀라울 것이 없다는 반응을 보인 것으로 전해졌습니다. 태국 검찰은 영국 정부에 탁신 전 총리의 신병을 인도해 줄 것을 요구할 계획이라고 밝혔습니다.

Supreme Court has sentenced former Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra to two
years in prison for conflict of interest.
Today's (Tuesday)ruling is the first against the former leader since he
was ousted in a 2006 military coup. The case concerned a land deal involving
his wife, Pojaman Shinawatra, who the court cleared of any wrongdoing.
Neither Mr. Thaksin nor Ms. Pojaman, who reject the charges, were present for
today's ruling. They fled to Britain two months ago, saying they would not get
a fair trial.
Mr. Thaksin said today he had long expected the decision.
The court issued a new arrest warrant for the former prime minister, and Thai
prosecutors say they will ask Britain to extradite him.
Mr. Thaksin has long been a controversial figure in Thai politics. His
opponents claim he continues to have influence in the current government, led
by his brother-in-law Prime Minister Somchai Wongsawat.
