A top U.S. diplomat says the
international community will take a coordinated approach to help Pakistan with
its economic troubles.
But U.S. Assistant Secretary of State Richard Boucher told reporters in
Islamabad today (Monday) Pakistan will not be getting a "cash
advance." Instead, he said any financial assistance would be directed to
certain areas.
Analysts say Pakistan urgently needs at least two billion dollars to stabilize
the economy, and even more money to repay debts.
The United States is part of a group called the "Friends of Pakistan"
that will address Pakistan's economic crisis at a meeting next month.
Boucher also praised Pakistan for taking action against militants along the
border near Afghanistan.
He discussed security issues with Pakistani Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani
and President Asif Ali Zardari earlier today (Monday).
