부시 여사는 16일 쿠바 내 인권 단체인 '레이디스 인 화이트' 회원들과 화상회의를 갖고 이같은 입장을 밝혔습니다. 이 날 화상회의에는 쿠바 출신인 카를로스 구티에레즈 미국 상무장관도 참석했습니다.
'레이디스 인 화이트'는 쿠바 수도 하바나에서 매주 시위 행진을 벌이면서, 쿠바 정부에게 모든 정치범을 석방할 것을 요구하고 있습니다. 이 단체 회원들 중 상당수는 남편이나 아들 등 가족들이 정치범으로 수감되어 있습니다. 이 단체는
또 자신들이 평화적인 시위를 벌였음에도, 쿠바 경찰로부터 위협과 폭력, 구속 등 부당한 조치를 당했다고 주장했습니다.

U.S. first lady Laura Bush says the United States will continue to support the efforts of human rights activists in Cuba.
Mrs. Bush and U.S. Secretary of Commerce Carlos Gutierrez spoke by video conference today (Thursday) with members of the "Ladies in White" activist group in Cuba.
The group holds a weekly march in Havana to demand the Cuban government release all political prisoners. Many of the group's members have had husbands, sons or brothers imprisoned. The White House says members of the group have been detained, threatened, and at times beaten by police during their peaceful protests.
Mrs. Bush said the women show "courage and determination" and that their stories prove that, in her words, dictatorship cannot crush the spirit of freedom.
