The leaders of India, Brazil and South Africa are urging wealthy countries to address the global financial crisis before it seriously hurts developing economies.

India's Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva and South Africa's President Kgalema Motlanthe issued the call today (Wednesday) during a summit in New Delhi.

The three nations issued a declaration calling for a new international initiative to solve the financial crisis. The leaders say they want stricter financial regulation and more multi-national consultations.

Brazil's president warned that poorer countries run the risk of being victims of a financial crisis generated by the rich.

Mr. Singh said the world's financial distress has prompted the three nations to boost trade among themselves.

India, Brazil and South Africa have some of the fastest growing economies in Asia, South America and Africa. The three countries have a combined population of nearly one-point-four billion people.
