Diplomats and aid agency sources
say the two aid workers kidnapped Monday near the Ethiopian-Somali border are
from Japan and the Netherlands.
The workers are with the Paris-based group Doctors of the World (Medecins du
Monde), which provides aid to victims of the drought gripping Ethiopia's
Ogaden (or Somali)region.
The group has refused to give details on the abductions. However, diplomats in
Ethiopia say the kidnap victims are a Dutch man and a Japanese woman.
It is not clear whether the abductions happened in Ethiopia or Somalia.
No one has claimed responsibility for the kidnappings. But a senior French
diplomat told VOA that the incident may have been the work of criminals.
Armed Somali gangs have carried out several abductions in recent months, often
targeting aid workers and demanding ransom.
