Friday, Democrats and Republicans said they had agreed on the broad outlines of
the plan for the government to purchase bad loans from financial institutions
that face collapse as a result of a housing market crisis.
But lawmakers
have not yet agreed on the specifics, like how much the government will pay
banks for the bad loans, or what the government will get from financial
institutions in return for federal assistance.
Some Democrats say they
also want the plan to provide relief for individual homeowners hard-hit by the
housing crisis.
