로버트 게이츠 미 국방장관은 이라크 상황이 개선돼고 있어 아프가니스탄에서 미군병력을 재배치하고 임무를 강화할수 있게 되었다고 말했습니다.
게이츠 장관은 그러나 미 하원 군사위원회 증언에서 10일 이라크의 상황 개선은 언제라도 번복될 여지가 있다고 경고했습니다. 게이츠 장관은 이라크 상황은 아직 취약한 상황이라고 말했습니다.
이보다 하루 전인 9일, 조지 부시 미국 대통령은 아프가니스탄에 미군 병력을 증파하고 이라크로 부터는 8천 명을 철수 시킬 계획이라고 발표했습니다.
게이츠 장관은 점차 제한된 방식이긴 하지만 미국은 앞으로 수 년간 이라크에 개입하게 될 것으로 예상해야 한다고 지적했습니다.

U.S. Defense Secretary Robert Gates says the United States is able to redeploy forces and increase its commitment to Afghanistan because of improved conditions in Iraq.
But Gates, in testimony to the House Armed Services Committee, warned there are potentials for the security gains in Iraq to be reversed. He described the situation as "fragile."
The testimony today (Wednesday) comes one day after President George Bush announced that more American troops are being sent to Afghanistan and eight thousand U.S. troops are being withdrawn from Iraq.
Gates said the United States should expect to be involved in Iraq for many years to come, although in changing and increasingly limited ways.
He said the situation in Afghanistan is more complex than in Iraq, since there is not an integrated enemy but rather a number of enemies, such as the Taliban, drug traffickers and al-Qaida.
The chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, Admiral Michael Mullen, said he is not convinced the coalition in Afghanistan is winning, but he said he is convinced it can win.
