미국의 콘돌리자 라이스 국무장관은 5일 리비아의 수도 트리폴리에서 무아마르 카다피 리비아 국가원수와의 회담 이후 양국관계가 "좋은 출발"을 하고 있다고 말했습니다.
라이스 장관은 5일 미국 국무장관으로서는 55년만에 처음으로 리비아를 방문했습니다.
라이스 장관은 카다피 원수와의 회담 이후 미국과 리비아는 무역, 문화, 교육 분야에서의 협력을 논의했다고 기자들에게 말했습니다. 리비아는 주요 원유 수출국입니다.
모하메드 압델 –라만 샬감 리비아 외무장관은 이날 기자회견에서 양국이 테러 대응책을 논의하고, 이라크와 수단의 다르푸르 지역의 상황에 대해서도 의견을 나눴다고 말했습니다.
라이스 장관은 자신의 이번 방문은 미국에게 더이상 영원한 적이 없다는 것을 나타내준다고 말했습니다. 라이스 장관은 하지만 미국과 리비아의 관계를 향상시키는데는 아직도 먼 길을 가야한다고 말했습니다.

U.S. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice says U.S.-Libyan relations are
"off to a good start" after she met with Libyan leader Moammar
Gadhafi during a landmark visit to Libya's capital, Tripoli.
Rice was the first top U.S. diplomat to travel to Libya in 55 years.
After talks with Mr. Gadhafi Friday, Rice told reporters that the two sides
discussed cooperation in trade, culture and education. Libya is a major oil
exporter.
Libyan Foreign Minister Mohammed Abdel-Rahman Shalgam told the same news conference
that the parties also talked about counter-terrorism and the situations in Iraq
and Sudan's troubled Darfur region.
Rice said her visit shows that Washington does not have permanent enemies, but
she says the U.S. and Libya still have a long way to go to advance their
relations.
