미국은 허리케인 구스타브의 피해자들을 돕기 위해 인도적 구호품 지원을 쿠바에 제안했습니다.
미국 정부 관계자들은 비정부 단체들을 통해 쿠바 시민들에게 지원할 준비가 돼있다고 밝혔습니다.
쿠바는 1주일전 허리케인 구스타브의 영향으로 가옥 10만 채가 파손됐다고 밝혔습니다.
구스타브의 피해를 핵 폭탄의 피해에 비유한 피델 카스트로 전 쿠바 국가 평의회 의장은 피해 규모가 수십억 달러에 이른다고 말했습니다.
쿠바는 지난 2005년 미국이 허리케인 카트리나의 피해를 입었을 때 1천 6백 명의 의사들을 미국에 보낼 것을 제안한 바 있습니다. 하지만 미국은 당시 쿠바의 도움을 필요로하지 않는다고 말했었습니다.

The United States has offered
humanitarian aid to Cuba to help victims of Hurricane Gustav.
U.S. officials say they are prepared to provide assistance to Cuban citizens
through non-government organizations.
Cuba said the storm destroyed or damaged 100-thousand homes when it tore across
the island more than a week ago.
Former Cuban president Fidel Castro likened the hurricane's destruction to that
of a nuclear bomb and said it could cost the communist government billions of
dollars.
In 2005, Cuba offered to send 16-hundred doctors to the United States to help
victims of Hurricane Katrina, which devastated much of the U.S. Gulf Coast. But
Washington said Cuban help was not needed.
