Russia is criticizing the European Union's decision to suspend
partnership talks with Moscow over the Georgia conflict.
But a Russian Foreign Ministry statement praised the majority of EU countries
for deciding (Monday) not to impose other, immediate penalties on Moscow
for its Georgian offensive.
The (Tuesday's)Russian ministry statement said the EU member-countries
took an overall "responsible approach" to the crisis, adding that
most countries realized "all too well the importance of mutually
beneficial cooperation."
Moscow has warned it will retaliate against any EU action that threatens its
interests -- a warning many analysts call a reminder to Europe of its heavy
dependence on Russia for energy supplies.
U.S. Vice President Dick Cheney departs today for a trip to the region, stopping
first in Azerbaijan, then Georgia and Ukraine, demonstrating U.S. support for
the former Soviet republics on Russia's southern border.
