허리케인 구스타브가 미국 남부 전역에 광범위한 피해를 입혔지만, 3년 전 허리케인 카트리나 때보다는 미약한 것으로 나타났습니다.
구스타브의 영향으로 7명 이상이 사망하고 멕시코만 근해 석유 시추가 중단됐으며, 루이지애나 주와 미시시피 주 일대에 홍수가 발생했습니다. 하지만 관계 당국은 구스타브의 피해가 우려와는 달리 재난 정도는 아니었다고 말했습니다.
루이지애나에는 구스타브의 상륙에 앞서 의무 대피령이 발령됐습니다. 또한 허리케인 카트리나 이후 레비 댐의 재방시설도 개선됐습니다.
그럼에도 불구하고 구스타브로 인한 총 피해액은 수십억 달러에 이를 것으로 전망됩니다.
바비 진달 루이지애나 주지사는 2일 대피한 주민들이 언제 다시 귀가할 수 있는 지에 관해서는 지방 자치단체들에 그 결정을 맡기겠다고 말했습니다.

Hurricane Gustav has left widespread damage after tearing through the southern United States, but nothing like the devastation from Hurricane Katrina three years ago.
Gustav killed at least seven people in the U.S., shut down oil production offshore, and flooded parts of (the Gulf of Mexico states of) Louisiana and Mississippi, but authorities said the storm was not the disaster they had feared.
Federal, state and local officials were widely criticized for their lack of preparation and response to Katrina. This time, they ordered evacuations before Gustav hit. And since Katrina, the levee (flood barrier) system in New Orleans has been improved, as have disaster preparations.
Still, the total cost of damage from Gustav is expected to run into the billions of dollars.
Curfews are still in effect for many of the hurricane-damaged areas. Louisiana
Governor Bobby Jindal today (Tuesday) said the state will defer to local
governments as to when residents who fled the region will be advised to come
home.
