European Union leaders meeting in Brussels have warned that relations with Russia are at a "crossroads" because of its intervention in Georgia. This, as huge crowds protested across the Caucasus country against the Russian military presence there.
A draft statement at today's(Monday's) emergency summit calls Russia's invasion of its southern neighbor unacceptable, and strongly condemns its move to recognize the breakaway regions of Abkhazia and South Ossetia.
EU members are divided over how to respond to Russia. Britain is calling for a suspension of EU-Russia partnership talks, while France and Germany are seeking to pursue dialogue with the Kremlin. Italy also is advocating a more conciliatory approach.
Russia has warned that it will retaliate against any EU action that threatens its interests, and called on the West to drop its support of Georgia's leadership.
Meanwhile in Georgia, hundreds of thousands of people poured into the streets in towns and cities across the former Soviet republic to protest Russia's military presence in their country.
