A German news magazine is reporting that the German military is considering
building a railway in Afghanistan to transport supplies.
"Der Spiegel"
magazine today (Saturday) says Germany wants to construct a 67-kilometer
railway linking the northern Afghan city of Mazar-i-Sharif with small Uzbek town
of Hairatan.
Germany has a military base in Mazar-i-Sharif and a base in
the Uzbek city of Termez, which already is linked to Hairatan. The magazine says
the railway would allow supplies to be transported between the two
bases.
"Der Spiegel" says the cost of the railway is not yet known, but
the military hopes for financial contributions from Germany's development agency
and other aid organizations.
