China has deported a German man and British woman who took part in pro-Tibet protests during the Olympic Games.
The two activists, Florian Norbu Gyanatshang and Mandie McKeown were flown out of Beijing just hours after eight Americans were sent home during the closing ceremony of the Games.
Last week, China sentenced the 10 foreign nationals to 10 days of administrative detention for their involvement in the pro-Tibet protests. They were all released early following appeals from the British and U.S. governments.
In a statement today (Monday), the Chinese Foreign Ministry defended the detentions, accusing the foreign activists of engaging in Tibet independence activities and violating Chinese law.
The U.S.-based Students for a Free Tibet says 53 foreign activists from North America, Europe and Asia were deported in connection with pro-Tibet protests held in Beijing since August sixth.
