랜트 대사는 주중 미국 대사관 관리들이22일 구금된 8명의 미국인들을 방문했으며, 이들로부터 중국측의 학대는 보고받지는 않았다고 말했습니다.
그는 중국정부가 올림픽 기간 중 더 큰 인내와 개방 정신을 보여주지 않은데에 실망감을 표시했습니다.
하지만 중국은 베이징이 올림픽 개최지로 선정될 당시 약속한 인권과 언론의 자유에 대한 약속을 충실히 이행했다고 주장하고 있습니다.
한편 중국의 관영 신화통신은 후진타오 중국 국가주석이 24일 국제 사절단을 위한 만찬에서 베이징 올림픽의 성공을 축하하고, 올림픽 개최를 지지해 준 전 세계에 감사를 전했다고 보도했습니다.

The top U.S. diplomat in China is calling for the immediate release of eight Americans detained for protesting during the Beijing Olympics.
Ambassador Clark Randt urged China today (Sunday) to demonstrate respect for human rights.
Randt says consular officials visited the eight detainees Friday, and that they have not claimed any maltreatment.
He expressed disappointment that China has not shown greater tolerance and openness during the Olympics.
Questions regarding China's human rights record, freedom of expression, and policies in Tibet have persistently loomed over the Beijing Olympics, which end today.
China says it is fulfilling promises on human rights and freedom of the press issues it made when Beijing was awarded the Games.
At a banquet today for international dignitaries, (the official Xinhua News Agency says) Chinese President Hu Jintao praised the success of the games, and thanked the world for its support of China's hosting of the competition.
