북대서양조약기구, 나토 외무장관들은 19일 러시아군이 그루지야에서 철수할 때까지 나토와 러시아간 정상적인 접촉이 불가능하다고 밝혔습니다.
나토의 야프 데 후프 셰퍼 사무총장은 벨기에 수도 브뤼셀에서 그루지야 사태에 관해 회의를 갖고 있는 나토 외무장관들이 이같이 합의했다고 전했습니다. 외무장관들은 또 그루지야와의 관계를 돈독히 하기 위해 '나토-그루지야 위원회'라는 새로운 토의기구를 설치하기로 합의했습니다.
나토 회의에 참석하고 있는 콘돌리자 라이스 미국 국무장관은 이번 회의는 그루지야의 민주주의와 영토보전에 대한 나토의 지지를 보여준다고 말했습니다.
라이스 장관은 유럽에서 앞으로 새로운 경계선을 획정할 일은 없을 것이라며 그루지야와 우크라이나는 여전히 나토 회원국 후보라고 강조했습니다.

NATO foreign ministers say they are seriously considering the implications of Russia's actions in Georgia and agree that regular contacts are impossible until Russian troops withdraw.
Secretary General Jaap de Hoop Scheffer said the ministers, meeting in Brussels, agreed that NATO cannot continue business as usual with Russia until its troops leave. He said the ministers also had agreed to set up a new forum, the NATO-Georgia Commission to deepen ties with the Caucasus country.
U.S. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice, who attended the meeting, said the session demonstrates NATO's support for Georgian democracy and territorial integrity. She stressed that there will be no new lines dividing Europe and that both Georgia and Ukraine remain possible candidates for NATO membership.
In Moscow, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov accused NATO of bias and efforts to save what he called Georgia's "criminal regime." He said Russian troops could withdraw within three or four days, depending on how quickly Georgian troops go back to their bases.
