중국에서 미국의 한 선교단은 배포용으로 자신들이 갖고 들어가려던 성경책 300권 가량을 공항 세관원들로부터 압수했다고 밝혔습니다.
'Vision Beyond Borders' 라고 불리우는 이 선교단의 지도자 팻 클라인 씨는 선교단 일행이 17일 태국으로 부터 중국 서남부 쿤밍 시에 도착한 뒤 이들 성경책을 압수당했다고 전했습니다.
클라인 씨는 자신과 다른 3명의 선교단은 쿤밍 시에서 중국어판 성경책을 일반인들에게 나눠줄 계획이었다면서 중국에 종교의 자유가 있다면 중국 당국자들이 왜 성경책을 압수했는지 그 이유를 모르겠다고 말했습니다.
중국의 헌법은 원칙적으로 종교의 자유를 허용하고 있으나 실제로 집권 공산당은 독자적인 예배를 엄격히 통제하고 있습니다.

An American missionary says Chinese customs officials have confiscated about 300 Bibles from a U.S. Christian group that was trying to bring the scriptures into the country for distribution.
The leader of the group called Vision Beyond Borders says the Bibles were seized after they arrived in China's southwestern city of Kunming today (Sunday) from Thailand.
Group leader Pat Klein says he and three others planned to hand out the Chinese language Bibles in Kunming.
Klein says he does not understand why authorities confiscated the Bibles if there is freedom of religion.
China's constitution allows freedom of religion in principle, but in reality the ruling Communist Party strictly controls independent worship.
Individuals who worship outside of state-sanctioned churches, mosques and temples in China are frequently harassed.
