Sudan Liberation Army (SLA) rebels say the Sudanese army has attacked rebel posts in northern Darfur - the latest attack in an offensive they say has killed 80 civilians and more than 30 rebels.
A rebel commander (Suleiman Marajan) said a convoy of 270 government vehicles carried out the attacks Tuesday, on rebel bases in the Atron area, near the border with Libya.
The commander said the attack was part of an effort by Sudanese officials to revive the conflict in Darfur and take control of rebel territories. He said Sudanese President Omar al-Bashir is trying to control the entire area, or as he put it, ensure "peace by force."
Last month, the International Criminal Court's (ICC) chief prosecutor (Luis Moreno-Ocampo) charged Mr. Bashir with genocide, crimes against humanity and war crimes in Darfur.
The commander of the United Nations-African Union peacekeeping force in Darfur, General Martin Luther Agwai, told the U.N. Tuesday not to put the "searchlight" on any one party.
