버마의 군사정부는 가택 연금 중인 야당 지도자 아웅산 수지 여사가 변호인을 만날 수 있도록 허용했습니다. 수지 여사가 자신의 변호인과 만난 것은 지난 2004년 이후 처음 있는 일입니다.
버마 야당 민주주의민족동맹 대변인은 10일 아웅산 수지 여사와 그의 변호인이 지난 8일 2시간 가량 만났다고 전했습니다. 이 대변인은 수지여사와 변호인은 수지여사의 가택연금 연장과 관련한 법적 문제를 논의했다고 말했습니다.
민주주의민족동맹은 버마법이 수지 여사는 5년 연속 가택연금 만을 허용하고 있다고 주장하면서 수지 여사의 가택 연금 연장 조치에 이의를 제기하고 있습니다.
그러나 버마 군사 정부는 이를 일축했습니다.
수지여사의 가택 연금은 지난 2003년 5월에 시작됐으며 지난 5월 12개월 더 연장됐습니다.

Burma's military government has allowed detained opposition leader Aung San Suu Kyi to meet with her lawyer for the first time since 2004.
A spokesman for the opposition National League for Democracy said today (Sunday) Aung San Suu Kyi and her attorney met for about two hours on Friday. He says the two discussed legal matters relating to her extended house arrest.
The N.L.D. is challenging the opposition leader's detention, arguing that Burmese law only allows her to be detained for five consecutive years.
Burma's junta has rejected the appeal.
Aung San Suu Kyi's current detention began in May of 2003, and was extended for another 12 months in May of this year.
It was not immediately clear how the meeting with her lawyer was arranged or why permission was granted.
