남오세티야를 둘러싸고 그루지아와 러시아가 무력 충돌을 벌이고 있는 가운데 미국의 조지 부시 대통령은 즉각 전투를 중단할 것을 촉구했습니다. 부시 대통령은 하계 올림픽 참관을 위해 베이징을 방문하는 중 이같이 말했습니다. 좀 더 자세히 전해 드립니다.
미국의 조지 부시 대통령은 9일 반드시 전투 행위가 중단돼야 한다고 말했습니다.
부시 대통령은 그루지아 상황을 깊이 우려하고 있다며, 미국은 이번 사태를 매우 심각하게 보고 있다고 말했습니다.
부시 대통령은 특히 전투가 그루지아내 다른 지역으로 확산되고 있는데 대해 우려를 표시했습니다. 그루지아 당국자들은 러시아 전투기들은 남오세티아의 경계선을 너머 인근 아브카지아 지역까지 폭격하고 있다고 전한 바 있습니다.
부시 대통령은 이번 폭력 사태로 지역 평화가 위기에 처하게 됐다고 말했습니다. 대규모 민간인 사상자가 발생했고, 또한 많은 사람들이 생명이 위태로운 상황에 처해 있다는 것입니다.
그루지아 정부는 지난 1990년 남오세티아의 자치권을 박탈했었으나, 1992년에 다시 이를 원상복귀시켰습니다. 그러나 현 그루지아 정부는 남오세티아를 다시 중앙정부의 지배 아래 두겠다고 선언했으며, 지난 7일 남오세티아에 대한 군사 작전을 시작했습니다.

조지 부시 미국 대통령은 모두가 한 걸음 뒤로 물러설 때라며, 적대 행위를 중지하고 문제 해결을 위해 중재자들과 협력해야 한다고 말했습니다.
부시 대통령은 그루지아는 주권 국가라면서 영토 보전 노력은 존중돼야 한다고 말했습니다. 부시 대통령은 모든 당사측 들에게 폭력 행위와 군사 작전을 즉각 중단할 것을 촉구했습니다.
미국 백악관은 부시 대통령이 러시아의 드미트리 메드베데프 대통령, 그루지아의 미하일 사카슈빌리 대통령과 별도의 대화를 갖고 이같은 미국 정부의 입장을 거듭 밝혔다고 말했습니다. 부시 대통령은 또한 블라디미르 푸틴 러시아 총리와도 그루지아 문제를 논의한 것으로 알려졌습니다.
부시 대통령은 베이징에서 기자들과 만난 자리에서 러시아에 대해 폭격을 중지하고 평화 노력에 협조하라고 촉구했다고 밝혔습니다.
부시 대통령은 가능한한 빨리 평화가 회복될 수 있도록 러시아 정부가 이같은 노력들을 지지해야 한다고 말했습니다.
러시아 정부 관리들은 그동안 1천5백명이 숨졌으며 수만명이 국경을 너머 러시아의 북오세티아로 피신했다고 말했습니다.
러시아와 그루지아, 두 구 소련 공화국이 남오세티아 문제로 대립하면서 국제 사회는 우려의 시선으로 바라보고 있습니다. 미국과 유럽연합, 유럽 안보협력기구는 앞서 정전을 가져오기 위한 노력의 일환으로 그루지아에 대표단을 파견한다고 밝힌 바 있습니다.
한편 그루지아의 미하일 사카슈빌리 대통령은 9일 정식으로 전쟁을 선포했습니다.

U.S. President George Bush is urging an end to the fighting in Georgia's
breakaway province of South Ossetia. VOA White House correspondent Paula Wolfson
reports from Beijing, where Mr. Bush is attending the Olympic Games.
President Bush says the
fighting must stop.
"I am deeply concerned about the situation in
Georgia," he said. "The United States takes this matter very
seriously."
He says he is particularly troubled by the fact the conflict
is spreading to other parts of Georgia - a reference to Russian bombings beyond
the borders of South Ossetia.
"The violence is endangering regional
peace," said President Bush. "Civilian lives have been lost and others are
endangered."
South Ossetia's autonomous status was abolished by the
Georgian government in 1990, then reinstated in 1992. The current government in
Tblisi has vowed to bring it back into the fold and on Thursday launched a
military operation to do just that.
But South Ossetia has strong ties to
Moscow, which supports the separatist movement. When Georgia sent its forces in,
the Russians responded by sending in more troops and bombers.
President
Bush says all sides need to step back, stop hostilities, and work with mediators
to resolve the conflict.
"Georgia is a sovereign nation and its
territorial integrity must be respected," he said. "We have urged an immediate
halt to the violence and a stand-down by all troops."
White House
officials say President Bush re-enforced the U.S. position in separate
conversations with Russian President Dmitri Medvedev, and Georgian President
Mikhail Saakashvili. In his brief comments to reporters in Beijing, Mr. Bush
called on Russia to stop bombing and start cooperating with peace
efforts.
"Russia needs to support these efforts so that peace can be
restored as quickly as possible," he said.
Russian officials claim 1,500 lives have been lost
and tens of thousands have fled to bordering North Ossetia in Russia.
The
feud between Russia and Georgia has pitted two former Soviet Republics against
each other, drawing international concern.
The United States, the
European Union and the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe
announced Friday they were sending a delegation to Georgia in hopes of securing
a cease-fire.
The U.N. Security Council is expected to meet again
Saturday to discuss the crisis.
