유엔 총회는 나바네템 필레이 남아프리카 공화국 출신 판사를 새 유엔 인권 고등판무관으로 임명했습니다.
필레이 판사는 현재 네델란드 헤이그의 국제형사재판소에서 판사직을 맡고 있으며 이번 임명으로 지난 2004년부터 유엔 인권 고등판무관 직을 맡아온 캐나다 출신 루이즈 아버 씨로 부터 직책을 물려받게 됩니다.
대변인을 통한 성명에서 반기문 유엔 사무총장은 유엔 총회의 이번 승인을 환영한다고 말했습니다. 필레이 씨를 추천했던 반 총장은 인권문제가 유엔 의제에서 중요한 위치를 차지하도록 노력하고 있다고 말했습니다.
필레이 판사의 유엔 인권 고등판무관 공식 임기는 9월 1일 부터 시작됩니다.

The United Nations General Assembly
has confirmed the appointment of South African judge Navanethem Pillay as the
new U.N. High Commissioner for Human Rights.
Pillay currently serves as a judge at the International Criminal Court at The
Hague. She will replace Canadian Louise Arbour, who served since 2004.
In a statement issued by his spokesperson, U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon
says he is "gratified" by the General Assembly's endorsement. Mr.
Ban, who nominated Pillay to the post, says he is committed to ensuring that
human rights remain high on the United Nations' agenda.
Pillay is expected to begin her term on September first.
