유엔 산하 식량농업기구, FAO는 올 해 곡물 생산량이 사상 최고치를 기록할 것으로 전망했습니다.
FAO가 18일 발표한 보고서에 따르면 올 해 곡물 생산량이 전세계적으로 3% 가까이 증가한 21억8천만 톤을 기록할 것으로 예상했습니다. 곡물 중에는 밀과 쌀 등의 생산이 증가했습니다.
FAO는 올 해 곡물 생산 증가로, 최근 식량 위기 대처에도 도움이 될 것으로 기대했습니다.
한편 국가별로는 인도의 곡물 생산량이 크게 증가했습니다.
인도 정부 관계자는 강수량이 적당해서 쌀과 옥수수, 콩 등의 풍작을 예상하고 있다고 말했습니다. 인도 정부는 하지만 쌀에 대한 수출 제한 조치는 계속 유지하겠다는 입장입니다. 그동안 일부에서는 쌀 가격 폭등을 막기위해 인도가 쌀 수출 제한을 해제해야 한다는 지적이 있었습니다.
한편 FAO는 곡물 생산이 수요를 간신히 넘기고 있다면서, 식량 가격이 오르지 않더라도 현재의 높은 수준을 당분간 유지할 것이라고 경고했습니다.

United Nations officials say there may soon be some relief from the global food crisis.The U.N.'s Food and Agricultural Organization says 2008 is turning into a banner year for cereal crops, like wheat and rice.
An FAO report released today (Friday) estimates global cereal production will increase by close to three-percent this year, to a record two-point-one-eight billion tons.
India is among the countries where production is increasing.
Indian officials say, thanks to adequate rains, they are expecting a "rich harvest" of rice, corn and soy. But they warn they do not expect to lift a ban on rice exports that helped send world rice prices soaring.
FAO officials also warn that while food prices may not rise further, they are likely to remain high because cereal production will barely outpace demand.
