U.S. President George Bush has lifted an executive ban on oil drilling off U.S. shores, and he is pressing Congress to take the same step, to encourage exploration for new energy supplies.
At a White House ceremony today (Monday), Mr. Bush formally lifted a long-standing presidential ban on offshore drilling. However, the action will have no effect unless Congress ( - the legislative branch of U.S. government - ) cancels its own similar prohibition.
Mr. Bush urged Congress last month to end its ban on drilling in the Outer Continental Shelf as well as in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge in Alaska. He contends lawmakers in the Democratic-led Congress are failing to ease American consumers' burden of steeply rising gasoline prices.
Democrats argue that oil companies are not taking advantage of more than 27 million hectares of federal land where they already have exploration rights.
