제임스 두빅 미 육군 중장은 이 날 미 하원 국방위원회 청문회에서 자신이 이라크에 파견된 지난 해 6월 이후 이라크 보안군의 실력이 향상됐다며 이같이 말했습니다.
두빅 중장은 그러나 미군이 이라크 내 훈련 지원 등을 위해 여전히 필요할 것이라고 경고했습니다. 두빅 중장은 이라크 인들이 언제쯤 이라크를 완전히 장악할 수 있겠냐는 질문에 대해서는 답변을 거부했습니다.
앞서 이라크 정부 관리들은 미군 주도 연합군의 이라크 철군 계획을 미국과의 장기적인 안보 협정에 포함시킨다는 전망을 제기했었습니다. 조지 부시 미 행정부는 철군 계획안에 반대하고 있습니다.

The senior U.S. military officer in charge of efforts to train Iraq's army and police units says Iraqi security forces have made significant progress, but that long-term U.S. help is still necessary.
In testimony before the U.S. House of Representatives Armed Services Committee today (Wednesday), Army Lieutenant General James Dubik said the quality of Iraq's security units has improved since he assumed his post in June 2007.
But Dubik warned that U.S. troops might still be needed for support and training operations in Iraq. He declined to say when Iraqis would be able to take full control of the country.
His testimony comes as Iraqi government officials raise the prospect of setting a timetable for the withdrawal of U.S.-led forces in Iraq as part of negotiations with the U.S. on a long-term security agreement.
The Bush administration opposes setting a withdrawal timetable.
