Palestinian officials say Israeli troops have raided six mosques and the city hall of the West Bank town of Nablus, as part of a crackdown against the Palestinian militant group Hamas.In the past week, Israeli troops have ordered schools, charities and health clinics in the West Bank closed on suspicion of links to Hamas militants. Israeli government spokesman Mark Regev says the crackdown is aimed at stopping Hamas from expanding its operations beyond the Gaza Strip, which it controls.
Palestinian Prime Minister Salam Fayyad today (Wednesday) called the raids extremely disruptive. He said they undermine efforts to establish law and order in areas under the control of the Palestinian Authority.
Elsewhere today, Palestinian demonstrators clashed with Israeli troops outside of the West Bank town of Nilin, during a protest against an extension of Israel's controversial security barrier.
