부시 대통령은 워싱턴으로 출발하기 직전 기자들에게 오는 2050년까지 온실 가스 배출량을 절반 이하로 줄이기로 한 전략은 세계 주요 경제국들이 협상안 마련을 위해 머리를 맞대게끔 한다는 점에서 큰 의미를 갖는다고 지적했습니다.
부시 대통령은 또한 8개국 정상들이 사흘 간의 회의 일정동안 무역보호주의를 배격하고 질병과 싸우며 개발을 촉진시키기 위한 노력을 기울인 점을 높이 평가했습니다.
선진 8개국 정상들과 중국, 호주, 인도 등 신흥 경제 8개국 정상들은 오늘 기후 변화 대책 마련을 위해 공동 노력을 벌인다는 데 합의했습니다.

U.S. President George Bush says "significant progress" was made on climate change and other issues at this year's summit for leaders of the world's eight major industrialized nations.
Speaking with reporters today (Wednesday) in northern Japan before he headed back to Washington, Mr. Bush said a strategy to cut greenhouse gas emissions in half by 2050 is important because it brings all major economies to the negotiating table.
Mr. Bush also praised efforts that were made at the three-day summit to resist protectionism, fight disease and promote development.
During a meeting today, major rich and developing nations also pledged to cooperate in the fight against climate change.
Japanese Prime Minister Yasuo Fukuda says the G-8 leaders discussed the summit's goals with their counterparts from eight major economies today, including Asian powerhouses China, Australia and India.
