지난 5월초 버마 국토를 초토화시킨 사이클론 나르기스 이재민들을 돕기 위해 버마정부가 1천6백명의 국제 구호 요원들의 입국을 허용했다고 버마 관영언론이 보도했습니다.
버마 관영 신문인 '미얀마의 빛'에 따르면 국제 구호 요원들의 절반이 사이클론이 강타한 이라와디 삼각주 지역에서 활동하고 있습니다.
당초 버마 군사정부는 국제 구호요원들이 피해지역에 접근하지 못하도록 막았으며 농경지를 초토화시킨 사이클론에 대한 늑장 대응으로 국제 사회의 비난을 받은 바 있습니다.
사이클론 나르기스로 인해 14만명이 사망하거나 실종된 것으로 추산되고 있습니다.

Burmese state-media say the country's military rulers have allowed more than 16-hundred international aid workers into Burma to help victims of Cyclone Nargis.
A report in today's (Tuesday) New Light of Myanmar newspaper says half of the foreign aid workers are involved in relief operations in cyclone-hit areas of the Irrawaddy Delta.
Foreign aid workers were initially barred from cyclone affected areas and Burma's ruling junta was criticized by the international community for its slow response to the storm which ripped across the country's agricultural belt in early May.
The Burmese government says it began allowing foreign aid workers into the country just days after the storm hit. However, it was not until late May that they were allowed to travel to the hardest-hit areas of the country.
Cyclone Nargis left nearly 140-thousand people dead and missing.
