Afghan officials say U.S.-led coalition troops, backed by air strikes, have killed at least 28 rebels and at least four civilians during a firefight in the southwest of the country.
The governor of Nimroz province Ghulam Dastagir Azad says the militants were killed during a raid Sunday in the Khash Rod district. He said three of those militants were Taliban commanders.
The coalition confirmed the mission, saying its troops killed militants. It did not confirm any civilian deaths. The coalition said the operation was aimed at disrupting militant activities in Nimroz.
Afghan, NATO and U.S. troops are fighting resurgent Taliban and other rebels in southern and eastern parts of the country. They have been fighting since a U.S.-led invasion removed the Taliban from power in late 2001.
