U.S. officials say they expect multilateral talks on North Korea's nuclear program to resume next week. The news follows the end of a six-month impasse over Pyongyang's declaration of nuclear activities.
U.S. State Department officials say talks between envoys from the six nations (United States, China, Japan, Russia and the two Koreas) could come as early as Monday -- their first meeting since last September. The officials say envoys will begin to work out how to verify an accounting that Pyongyang provided Thursday of its plutonium enrichment program.
A State Department spokesperson (Deputy Spokesman Tom Casey) said a full ministerial-level meeting of the six parties might be held in late July. U.S. officials have said verification should begin by August 11th.
Earlier Friday, North Korea carried out a televised demolition of the cooling tower at its main nuclear complex, in a sign that it has met a commitment to disable permanently the Yongbyon facility.
