대통령이 자유로운 대통령 선거를 치루고 유권자들에 대한 위협을 중단할 것을 아프리카 지도자들이 촉구해야 한다고 말했습니다.
라이스 장관은 18일 아프리카 지도자들에게 짐바브웨에 대해 강경한 입장을 취할 것을 촉구했습니다.
이날 타보 음베키 남아프리카 공화국 대통령은 다음주 거행될 짐바브웨 대선 결선 투표에 대해 무가베 대통령과 협의하기 위해
짐바브웨에 도착했습니다.
라이스 국무장관은 19일 유엔 안전보장이사회에서 짐바브웨 문제를 논의하길 희망하고 있다고
말했습니다. 라이스 장관은 워싱턴에서 열린 라일라 오딩가 케냐 총리와의 공동 기자회견에서 이같이 말했습니다.
오딩가 총리는 짐바브웨에서 최근 치뤄진 대선이 ‘속임수’였다면서, 짐바브웨는 아프리카 대륙의 ‘수치’라고 말했습니다. 오딩가 총리는 짐바브웨 대선 결선 투표가 공정하게 치뤄질 수 있도록 국제 평화유지군이 파병돼야 한다고 말했습니다.

U.S. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice says it is time for
African leaders to tell Zimbabwean President Robert Mugabe to hold free
elections and stop intimidating voters.
Rice urged African leaders to take a stronger stand on Zimbabwe today (Wednesday),
as South African President Thabo Mbeki arrived in Zimbabwe for talks with Mr.
Mugabe about next week's run-off presidential election.
Rice said she hopes to address Zimbabwe's situation at the United Nations
Security Council on Thursday. She spoke in Washington at a news conference with
Kenyan Prime Minister Raila Odinga.
Mr. Odinga called Zimbabwe's recent elections a "sham" and said the
country is an embarrassment to Africa. He said an international peacekeeping
force should be sent to Zimbabwe to ensure proper elections are held.
