A Japanese media
report says Japan and China have reached a compromise and agreed to jointly
develop gas fields and share profits in disputed areas of the East China Sea.
A Kyodo news agency report today (Monday) cites sources close to the
ongoing talks who say the two sides are expected to announce the deal as early
as this week.
A spokesman for the Japanese government confirmed today that a deal was in the
works, but says details of the deal are still being finalized.
China's Foreign Ministry did not have any immediate comment on the reported
deal.
The two countries' long-standing debate over exploration rights in an
overlapping economic zone in the East China Sea has strained diplomatic ties
between them for years.
