미국의 콘돌리자 라이스 국무장관이 레바논의 신임 대통령을
만나 현재 수립과정에 있는 레바논 정부에 지지를 나타냈습니다.
라이스 장관은 지난달 레바논의 여야가 권력분점에 합의한
이후 미국의 고위 관료로서는 처음으로 슐레이만 신임 대통령을 만났습니다.
라이스 장관은 16일, 레바논의 새 정부가 과격 무장세력
헤즈볼라에 더 힘을 실어주고 있지만 미국은 레바논 정부를 계속 지지할 계획이라고 밝혔습니다. 헤즈볼라는 미국
국무부에 의해 테러단체로 지목돼 있습니다.
라이스 장관은 그러나 레바논의 여야가 이룬 합의가 레바논
국민들의 이익과 궁극적으로 미국의 이익에도 부합하는 만큼 이를 지지한다고 밝혔습니다.
푸아드 시니오라 레바논 총리와 만난 자리에서, 라이스 장관은 이스라엘이 점령하고 있는 레바논 남부 셰바 농장지대 (Shebaa farms)를 둘러싼 갈등을 이제 해소할 때가 됐다고 미국 정부는 판단하고 있다고 말했습니다.

U.S. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice has met with Lebanon's newly
elected president, voicing support for the country's yet-to-be-formed
government.
Rice is the first high-ranking U.S. official to meet with President
Michel Suleiman since Lebanon's power-sharing agreement was reached
last month.
She said today (Monday) the U.S. plans to support the new government even though it gives more power to the Iranian-backed militant group Hezbollah.
The U.S. State Department lists Hezbollah as a terrorist organization.
But Rice said the U.S. supports Lebanon's agreement because it serves
the interests of the Lebanese people and ultimately the interests of
the United States.
During a meeting with Lebanese Prime Minister Fuad Siniora, Rice also
said the U.S. believes the time has come to resolve a dispute over
Shebaa Farms -- Israeli-occupied territory claimed by Lebanon.
