한국의 이명박 대통령은 광우병에 대한 국민의 우려를 불식시키기 위해 노력하는 가운데 30개월 이상된 미국산 쇠고기는 수입하지 않을 것이라고 말했습니다.
이 대통령은 15일 미국의 수출업자들이 광우병에 더 많이 걸리기 쉬운 것으로 믿고 있는 오래된 쇠고기 선적을 자발적으로 금지해 달라는 한국측의 요청에 미국이 긍정적인 입장을 보이고 있다고 말했습니다.
이명박 대통령의 이같은 발언은 한국과 미국의 고위 무역협상 대표들이 이곳 워싱턴에서 이 문제를 논의하고 있는 가운데 나왔습니다.
한국의 김종훈 통상교섭본부장은 미국의 수잔 슈왑 무역 대표와 회담하기 위해 지난 13일 미국에 도착했습니다. 하지만 현재까지 어떠한 타협안도 발표되지 않고 있으며 16일 협상이 재개될 예정입니다.
한국과 미국은 모두 미국산 쇠고기는 안전하며 지난 5년 사이 어떠한 광우병도 보고되지 않았다고 주장하고 있습니다.

South Korean President Lee
Myung-bak says his country will not import U.S. beef from cattle older than 30
months, as he tries to quell public fear of mad cow disease.
Mr. Lee said today (Sunday) that Washington showed a positive stance
toward South Korea's request that U.S. exporters voluntarily refrain from
shipping beef from older cattle, which is believed to be more prone to the
disease. The president's statement comes as top South Korean and U.S. trade
officials discuss the issue in Washington.
South Korea's Trade Minister Kim Jong-hoon arrived in the U.S. on Friday for
talks with U.S. Trade Representative Susan Schwab. But so far no compromise has
been announced. They are to resume talks on Monday.
Both countries insist the U.S. beef is safe and that no cases of mad cow
disease have been reported in the past five years.
