U.S. Republican presidential candidate John McCain says his Democratic rival, Barack Obama, would raise taxes if elected -- a plan McCain says would hurt American businesses.
McCain told a meeting of small business owners in Washington, DC today (Tuesday) that Obama's plan to repeal tax cuts enacted by President George Bush would represent the biggest tax increase since World War Two.
Obama has criticized McCain's support of the president's tax cuts, calling the Bush administration the most "fiscally irresponsible in history."
At a campaign stop in (the central state of) Missouri today, Obama said under the current policy, most tax cuts have gone to the wealthy and not the middle class. He says getting more money to working families will increase consumer spending and promote economic growth.
Obama also said his campaign is considering McCain's offer to hold a series of town-hall meetings, in which the two candidates will answer questions asked directly by voters.
