A senior U.S. official says a U.S.-Iraqi security deal that would allow American troops to stay in Iraq beyond this year poses no threat to Iran.
The State Department's top official on Iraq, David Satterfield, spoke today (Tuesday) about Iranian concerns the agreement could lead to permanent U.S. military bases in Iraq.
He also said U.S. officials are confident they can meet a July deadline to reach an agreement with Iraq on the security deal.
Iran opposes the agreement, which would allow U.S. forces to stay in Iraq beyond the December 31st expiration of the United Nations mandate. The agreement would also give U.S. troops the same legal immunity they have elsewhere around the world.
