미국은 짐바브웨 수도 하라레 주재 미국과 영국 외교관들이 5일 억류된 것과 관련해 짐바브웨 정부를 비난했습니다.
션 맥코맥 국무부 대변인은 이 날 정례 브리핑에서 외교관들의 구금에 대해 너무나 분노한다며 짐바브웨 정부의 자국민에 대한 폭압적인 면을 보여준다고 밝혔습니다.
제임스 맥기 미국 대사는 해당 외교관들이 최근 정치적 폭력 사태 희생자들을 방문한 뒤 수도에서 북쪽으로 45 km 떨어진 곳에서 억류되었다고 밝혔습니다.
맥기 대사는 경찰이 도로 검문소에서 외교관들을 막고 이들이 탄 차량 바퀴를 못 쓰게 만들었다고 밝혔습니다. 맥기 대사는 로버트 무가베 짐바브웨 대통령 측 무장단체 지지자들이 외교관들이 이 지역 경찰서로 동행하지 않으면 차량에 탄 외교관들을 불태워버리겠다고 위협했다고 밝혔습니다.
짐바브웨 당국자들은 경찰은 폭도들로부터 외교관들을 보호하려 했다며 맥기 대사의 이같은 주장을 부인하고 있습니다.
미국과 영국 당국자들은 이들 외교관들은 짐바브웨 외무부와의 협상 끝에 석방됐다고 밝혔습니다.

The United States is denouncing Zimbabwe's government after U.S. and British diplomats were detained for several hours north of Harare today (Thursday).
U.S. State Department spokesman Sean McCormack says the detention was "absolutely outrageous," calling it a taste of the oppression Zimbabwe's government uses against its own people.
U.S. Ambassador James McGee says the incident happened about 45 kilometers north of the capital after the diplomats visited victims of recent political violence.
McGee says police stopped the diplomats at a roadblock and slashed tires on their vehicles. He says militant supporters of President Robert Mugabe threatened to burn the diplomats in their cars if they did not go with police to a local station.
Zimbabwean officials reject McGee's account, saying police were trying to protect the diplomats from an unruly mob.
U.S. and British officials say the diplomats were released after negotiations involving Zimbabwe's foreign ministry.
