올해 46살의 일리노이 주 출신 초선상원의원인 오바마 의원은 어제밤 미국 중서부 미네소타주의 수천명의 지지자들 앞에서후보 지명권을 획득했다고 선언했습니다.
오바마 의원은 미국 역사상 흑인으로서는 처음으로 주요 정당의 대통령 후보로 사실상 확정됐습니다.
오바마 의원은 어제 민주당의 마지막 예비선거에서 얻은 일반 대의원과 수퍼 대의원들의 추가 지지선언으로 당의 대통령 후보 지명을 받는데 필요한 대의원 수 2천1백18명 보다 더 많은 대의원을 확보했습니다.
조지 부시 미국 대통령은 4일 백악관 대변인을 통해 오바마 의원에게 축하를 건넸습니다. 부시 행정부 내 흑인으로서 최고위직에 있는 콘돌리자 라이스 국무장관은 오바마 의원의 승리는 미국 헌법의 '우리, 모두'라는 문구가 모든 이를 뜻하기 시작했다는 것을 의미한다고 말했습니다.
공화당 대통령 후보로 사실상 확정된 존 맥케인 상원의원은 이 날 오바마 의원에 대해 오는 12일부터 시작되는 미국 전역의 합동 시 회의에 참석할 것을 초청했습니다.
맥케인 상원의원은 또 루이지애나주 바톤 루주에서 오바마 의원의 이라크 철군 정책은 정말 잘못됐다며, 이란과 고위급 회담을 열겠다는 오바마 의원의 계획은 판단력 부족을 나타낸다고 밝혔습니다.
한편 경쟁자인 힐러리 클린턴 상원의원은 최종 결정을 내리기 전에 지지자들, 당직자들과 협의하겠다며 대통령 후보경선의 포기를 거부했습니다.

Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice, the highest-ranking African American in the Bush administration, said Obama's achievement indicates that the phrase "We the people" in the United States Constitution is beginning to mean everyone.
The presumptive Republican presidential nominee, Senator John McCain, today invited Obama to take part in a series of joint town hall meetings across the country, beginning June 12th. In Baton Rouge, (in the southern state of) Louisiana, McCain called Obama's plan to withdraw troops from Iraq "dead wrong" and said Obama's plan to engage in high-level talks with Iran shows "a lack of judgment."
The two rivals face each other in the November general election.
Obama surpassed the two-thousand-118 delegates needed for the nomination Tuesday, after earning the endorsement of key "superdelegates" and splitting the last two remaining primary elections with his rival, Senator Hillary Clinton.
