'광우병 위험 미국산 쇠고기 전면 수입을 반대하는 국민대책회의' 주최로 오후 7시부터 서울광장에서 촛불문화제가 열린 데 이어 시민들은 서울 도심 곳곳으로 거리 행진을 이어갔습니다.
한국의 '연합뉴스'에 따르면, 경찰은 이번 시위에 참가한 시민 수를 4만명 정도로 추정하고 있습니다. 국민대책회의 측은 10만명이 참가했다고 주장했습니다.
시위자들은 이명박 대통령이 지난 달 미국을 방문해 조지 부시 미국 대통령과 만나 미국산 쇠고기 수입의 마지막 제한조치까지 없애가며 체결한 협상을 철회할 것을 요구했습니다.
한국은 지난 2003년 미국에서 광우병에 걸린 소가 발견되면서 미국산 쇠고기 수입을 일시 중단했으며 지난 몇 년간은 제한된 양의 미국산 쇠고기만을 허용했었습니다.
시위는 한국 정부가 미국산 쇠고기의 수입 위생 조건 고시를 확정 발표한 지난 목요일부터 격화됐습니다.
한국 정부는 모든 수입 쇠고기에 대해 공중위생과 안전을 위해 검역과 유통을 철저히 감시하겠다고 밝혔습니다.
한편, '연합뉴스'에 따르면, 경찰은 이 날 오후 청와대 인근에서 촛불 집회를 벌이던 64명을 연행했습니다.

Tens of thousands of South Koreans rallied in the capital of Seoul today (Saturday) to protest their country's full resumption of beef imports from the United States.
Police estimate at least 20 thousand people gathered outside city hall in what they say was a largely peaceful protest.
Demonstrators demanded President Lee Myung-Bak rescind the deal he made during his visit last month with U.S. President George Bush lifting the final restrictions on American beef imports.
Seoul suspended U.S. imports in 2003 after a case of the brain-wasting illness known as mad cow disease was detected in the United States. It has allowed limited amounts of U.S. beef into the country for the past year.
Protests have intensified since Thursday, when South Korea unveiled new rules allowing more U.S. beef imports. The South Korean government says that all imported beef will be thoroughly monitored to ensure public health and safety.
