이라크의 누리 알 말라키 총리가 국제사회에 대해 이라크의 부채를 탕감해줄 것을 호소했습니다.
말라키 총리는 오늘 스웨덴에서 열린 이라크의 정치 경제 개혁 5개년 계획에 관한 국제회의에서, 지난 1990년 사담 후세인 이라크 정권의 쿠웨이트 침공에 따른 전쟁보상금 지불도 중단하게 해달라고 요청했습니다. 말라키 총리는 외채 상환으로 인해 이라크의 재건이 더디게 진행되고 있다고 덧붙였습니다.
이번 국제회의를 공동 주최한 반기문 유엔 사무총장은 이라크가 상당한 발전을 이뤘으며 정치,경제, 안보 상의 중요한 성과를 이루고 있다고 밝혔습니다.
미국의 콘돌리자 라이스 국무장관은 이번 회의를 위해 출국하기에 앞서, 이라크의 상황을 개선하기 위해서는
국제사회가 치안 불안을 이유로 이라크 지원을 연기하는 일이 더 이상 없어야 한다고 말했습니다. 라이스 장관은 이라크의 치안이 개선되고 정치체제도 점차 작동하고 있어 이라크 상황이 일년 전에 비해 근본적으로 변했다고 말했습니다.

Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki has opened a conference on Iraq by urging the international community to cancel his country's debt.
Speaking to delegates gathered near Stockholm, Mr. Maliki also called for an end to compensation that Iraq is required to pay due to Saddam Hussein's 1990 invasion of Kuwait.
The conference brings together sponsors of a five-year plan to reform Iraq's economy and political system (known as the "International Compact with Iraq"). Hundreds of delegates from dozens of countries are in attendance.
Most of Iraq's foreign debt is owed to fellow Arab countries such as Saudi Arabia and Kuwait. Mr. Mailiki says such debt has hampered reconstruction efforts.
The conference is being co-chaired by U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon, who told delegates Iraq had made "notable progress."
He said Iraq is on its way toward meeting economic, political and security benchmarks.
