Bangladesh's former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina appeared in a special court in the capital, Dhaka, today to face corruption charges. She was quickly granted a six-day extension after her lawyers told the judge they had not received the necessary documents and needed more time to prepare.
Longtime rival, former Prime Minister Khaleda Zia, did not appear in court, as scheduled.
On Sunday, the army-backed interim government approved a new commission designed to streamline the hundreds of corruption cases brought under a widespread crackdown on graft.
The commission will allow people to confess to corruption without going to jail. The latest prominent figure to be arrested is former army chief General Mustafizur Rahman. He is accused of corruption -- along with former Prime Minister Hasina -- in connection with the purchase of eight fighter jets from Russia.
