최근 대규모 지진이 강타했던 중국 서남부 쓰촨성에서 또다시 강력한 여진이 발생해 적어도 1명이 숨지고 260명 가량이 다쳤습니다.
중국 정부에 따르면 25일 진도 5.8의 이 여진으로 7만 여채의 가옥이 파괴됐습니다. 미국 국립지질 연구소는 이번 여진의 진앙지는 최근 강진 피해를 입은 미안양에서 동북쪽으로 145킬로미터 가량 떨어진 곳이라고 밝혔습니다.
중국의 원자바오 총리는 지진으로 인한 사망자가 8만명을 넘어설 수도 있을 것이라고 말하고 있습니다.
중국 관영 언론은 25일 지진이 발생한 이후 쓰촨성에는 5천 5백명 정도의 어린이들과 4천 8백명 가량의 노인들이, 가족들의 사망이나 실종 또는 가족들이 집으로 갈 수 없는 상황에서 가족과 연락이 끊긴 채 홀로 남아있다고 보도했습니다.

A strong aftershock from the recent massive earthquake in southwestern China has killed at least one person in the country's Sichuan province and injured about 260.
The Chinese government said Sunday's five-point-eight magnitude aftershock damaged some 70-thousand homes. The U.S. Geological Survey put the epicenter of the aftershock about 145 kilometers northeast of the devastated city of Mianyang.
Premier Wen Jiabao has said the death toll from the May 12th earthquake could exceed 80-thousand people. State media reported Sunday that nearly 55-hundred children and nearly 48-hundred elderly people have been left alone in Sichuan province since the quake, with their family members either dead, missing, or away and unable to get home.
Theh Xinhua news agency says officials are arranging care for those victims.
