조지 부시 미국 대통령은 23일 한국과 콜롬비아, 파나마와의 자유무역협정 FTA 비준을 촉구했습니다. 부시 대통령은 자유무역은 미국 경제와 일자리 창출에 좋고 국가안보에도 도움이 된다고 강조했습니다.
부시 대통령은 백악관 잔디밭에서 견인차를 비롯한 미국산 제품들 앞에 서서 이들 제품들은 관세를 낮추기로 합의한 국가들에 판매하는게 훨씬 더 쉽다고 말했습니다.
부시 대통령은 민주당이 다수당인 미 의회가 자유무역협정의 비준을 가로막음으로써 실수를 범하고 있다고 재차 강조했습니다.
그러나 민주당 의원들은 콜롬비아의 경우, 자국의 인권과 노동조합을 충분히 보호하지 않는다며 미국과 콜롬비아간의 FTA를 반대하고 있습니다.

U.S. President George Bush stepped up his campaign for free trade agreements with Colombia, Panama, and South Korea today (Friday).
He said free trade is good for the economy, good for jobs, and helps U.S. national security.
Mr. Bush spoke on the White House lawn in front of a tractor and other U.S.-made products that he said would be much easier to sell to countries that have agreed to cut tariffs on them.
The President said again that the Democratic-controlled congress is making a mistake by blocking passage of free trade agreements.
But Democrats have said they oppose the Colombia trade agreement because, in their view, it does too little to protect human rights and trade unions in that nation.
